No. 10 Texas Tech rolled to a 4-1-1 win over Kansas State at the 2021 Big 12 Match Play Tournament on Tuesday afternoon to improve to 3-0-0 at The Club at Houston Oaks.
The Red Raiders will play No. 1-ranked Oklahoma at 8 a.m. on Wednesday and would advance to the championship match with a win or a tie against the Sooners. Pool B is led by the Texas Longhorns who are the only other 3-0-0 team in the field after a 3-0-3 win over Iowa State on Tuesday afternoon, while Oklahoma State is 2-0-1 going into the final day.
TTU, which won the tournament in 2019, opened this year's event with wins over Kansas and West Virginia on Monday. The Red Raiders are the only unbeaten team in Pool A with top-seeded Oklahoma finishing 3-3-0 against Kansas in the morning session. The Sooners won both their matches on Monday against West Virginia and Kansas State and will need to beat the Red Raiders to advance to the championship match on Wednesday afternoon.
Texas Tech earned the win over the Wildcats with victories from Ludvig Aberg, Kyle Hogan, Baard Skogen and Andy Lopez on Tuesday. Aberg and Skogen improved to 3-0 at the tournament with their wins coming in dominant fashion. Aberg claimed a 6&4 win and Skogen rolled to a 7&6 victory. Lopez claimed the third win at 5&4 and Hogan secured a 4&2 win. Garret Martin tied his match and is now 2-0-1 at the event.
The Pool A & B winners will meet at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon to determine the tournament champion. The championship match will feature the team with the highest point total from Pool A with the team with the highest point total from Pool B. The third-place match will be between the teams with the second highest point totals from their respective pools. Each team will participate during the championship afternoon.
During the pool play portion, each team will play four matches. Teams will get three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. At the conclusion of pool play, each team will be ranked 1-5 within their pool based on the amount of points accrued. The tournament will be played over three days consisting of pool play for two-and-a-half days (five sessions) followed by a final round the afternoon of day three. Match play will occur during all rounds. Each team match will consist of six individual matches.
TTU, which is ranked No. 10 in the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll, won the 2019 Big 12 Match Play Tournament. Baylor is the defending champion of the tournament while also winning the inaugural event in 2018. The Big 12 Match Play Tournament is the final fall tournament for the Red Raiders who will return to competition in February at the Ameri Ari in Hawaii.
