An 18-year-old mother and her one-year-old boy were hospitalized Tuesday after the family's two dogs turned on them while playing in the backyard that afternoon.

Slaton police weren't sure why the dogs turned on the family, but report the animals bit the child severely on the ankle and wounded the mother while she separated them from the child. Her bite was much less severe than the child's injury. Two other victims were hurt in the attack, but they were treated and released at a clinic.

Chief Trevor Barnes said the dogs were seized and euthanized at the family's request, and the animals' brains will be sent for rabies testing.
