TxDOT will conduct a comprehensive study on expanding Interstate 27 from Laredo to the northern Panhandle. Governor Abbott signed the order Tuesday, expecting an evaluation of its feasibility and its costs.

It will specifically look at the logistics behind improving the Interstate north and south, to a four-lane divided highway.

After the study is done, TxDOT will unite all the county judges that would be affected, as well as other municipal and elected leaders, in an advisory committee. They would meet twice a year in Lubbock and San Angelo.

Smaller segment committees will evaluate the costs in their cities and counties, and submit those to the advisers next summer. There will be quarterly meetings in Lubbock, Amarillo, Laredo and San Angelo.

A final report is due to the governor by the beginning of 2021.
