Grand jury indicts man accused of sexually assaulting a minor
A Lubbock grand jury has indicted a man accused of sexually assaulting a minor.
The victim reported she was a statutory rape victim of Kevin Bates, 31. She told police she got pregnant at 15 and Bates is the father of her child. She and Bates lived together from 2015 to Feb. 2019, according to a police report.
The police report indicates the victim came forward after Bates threatened to "make her life hell" since they weren't together anymore.
Bates reportedly questioned police regarding these allegations saying he did not know she was a minor. After speaking with police, Bates proceeded to call the victim and threatened to shoot her and her family for reporting it. The victim recorded the threats and Bates was charged with retaliation.
The victim told police Bates was physically and sexually abusive during their relationship. She reported more than 12 cases to the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office, according to the police report. She told police she broke off the relationship because she wanted to stop Bates from "ruining any other young girls' lives."
Bates is held on a $150,000 bond.
